How to Trade-in Your Car

It’s easy to trade in your used car and put the value of it toward a down payment. Essentially, you’re using your car to help pay for its replacement. To do that, and to make sure you’re getting a fair return on it, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Get an Estimate – Start by getting a rough estimate of how much your vehicle might be worth. All you need to do is find a value your trade-in tool and enter some basic information. That usually includes the make, model, and mileage. Entering more specific info, like the vehicle identification number (VIN), or including a photo of your vehicle can sometimes give you a more approximate estimate.
  2. Figure out Fair Market Value – It’s always a good idea to get a second opinion. That’s true for cars too. There are plenty of reliable sites out there that can give you an estimate, such as Kelley Blue Book® and Autotrader. However, if you’re planning on trading in your car and buying a new one, your best bet is to use our dealership’s Value Your Trade tool.
  3. Make Your Car Look as Good as New – Next, you want to get your car in tip-top shape. That includes washing and waxing it, cleaning the interior, and looking for any noticeable wear and tear.
  4. Schedule Maintenance – Whether you see something that needs to be fixed or your car looks sharp, you should always bring it in for maintenance before you get it appraised. This gives you a chance to get any wear and tear patched up and any problems under the hood taken care of.
  5. Have the Car Inspected – Along the same lines, get your car inspected too. It shows that you’re on top of your game and your vehicle is in premium condition.
  6. Put a Vehicle History Report Together – Once everything is in order, get a vehicle history report for your vehicle. It should include as much information as possible, including a rundown of its full service history.
  7. Schedule an Appraisal – After you’ve compiled a report and gotten your car in good condition, you’re ready to schedule an appraisal. Once you’ve been given an offer on how much your car is worth, you can apply it to the purchase of a new one.
